Most motorcycle problems don't come out of nowhere โ there's usually a warning sign a few hundred kilometres before something actually fails. Here's what to watch for, and when it's worth booking a diagnostic rather than waiting it out.
-
1
A dashboard warning light
The obvious one, but riders often keep going "just to see." Modern bikes log fault codes for a reason โ a diagnostic reads exactly what triggered it instead of guessing.
-
2
Rough or unstable idle
If the engine's hunting for revs or stalling at lights, that's often a fuelling or sensor issue that's easy to fix early and expensive to ignore.
-
3
Hesitation or flat spots on throttle
A bike that used to pull cleanly but now stumbles under acceleration is usually telling you something in the fuel or ignition system needs attention.
-
4
New or unusual noise
Ticking, knocking, whining or grinding that wasn't there before is worth getting checked immediately โ noise is often the cheapest, earliest warning you'll get.
-
5
Spongy or less responsive brakes
Brakes should feel consistent every time. Any change in bite point or lever feel is a safety issue, not just a maintenance one.
-
6
Noticeably worse fuel economy
If you're filling up more often than usual with no change in how you ride, that's often a sign of an underlying fuelling or sensor problem.
-
7
Vibration that wasn't there before
A bit of vibration is normal on most bikes โ a new or worsening vibration usually isn't, and can point to anything from balance issues to a developing mechanical fault.
